ISLAND ART
By
DRIVERS
WORLD
There are approximately ten thousand miles of roads in
the U.K. the majority of which are lined with verges, central
reservations and dotted liberally with roundabouts.
The latter are more commonly called islands by most
motorists and Britain has cornered the world market in their usage. You
cant drive far on any road in the British Isles without having to
negotiate one - much to the confusion of visitors from abroad.
You could describe the phenomena as
islands on islands.
In
recent years there has been a growing trend to make these sites more
interesting by decorating them with what
DRIVERS WORLD has dubbed Island Art, a lot of which can
be extremely imaginative and relevant to the area in which it is
located. A good example of this is Spitfire Island in Birmingham.
The average motorist drives
approximately 12,000 miles a year and, if the drivers observation is as
good as it should be, cannot fail to come across these displays from
time to time.
For the benefit and enjoyment of all
motorists world wide you are invited to send in any photographs which
you feel may fit in well with the idea of Island Art.
You can send them in via the Forum
or Email and if thought appropriate your shot will be included for
display with all the others.
The material will become the
property of DRIVERS WORLD,
but if you would like accreditation please include your name and home
town. It would also be useful if you could give a brief location and any
background information concerning the art involved.
To get Island Art started
DRIVERS WORLD has kicked it off
with 60 or so items to try and give a flavour of what is
required.
