Professionalism.

As a newly qualified A.D.I. you are, from now on, a professional driver and should act accordingly. There are various reasons for this, a few of which are outlined below.

1.          Your pupils are going to want be confident that they are in safe hands and being taught by an instructor who really knows his subject. It is necessary therefore that you keep up to speed on all the theory as well as the practical aspects of driving. Would you really want to be seen by a doctor who is still practicing medicine he was taught 50 years ago? No, you wouldn’t. Well being a driving instructor is in the same category and can equally be a literal matter of life or death.

2.          Keeping up to speed on both the theory and practical aspects of driving is not as difficult as you may think. The following two recommendations have benefits for both you and your pupils.

a.        You can practice the free Highway Code theory questions from the DRIVERS WORLD huge question bank. These are in blocks of 20. On each lesson give your pupil a sheet of questions which can be worked on at home. Most pupils do not think of it as homework and will actually rise to the challenge of getting a 100% mark. Ask them to bring their effort out with them on the next lesson and spend a few minutes marking them up. If this is done half way through the lesson it gives you and them a break from what can be a stressful experience for some. Having marked them up give them guidance on the ones they get wrong.

In this way you will be constantly reminded of all the things you need to be teaching your pupil and your pupil will be learning for both the theory and the practical tests at the same time. When they see they are getting all this help from a professional they will keep coming back!

Practice what you preach. You are now a professional and as such you should ensure your own driving is as perfect as it can be. Whether driving for pleasure or business put into practise all your newly acquired skills. By doing so you will transmit to the public at large a good image of the Driving Instructors’ profession and your school in particular. There is nothing worse than seeing an instructor breaking all the rules he tells his pupils not to break.
Download the DRIVERS WORLD visual aids lesson plans and use them to guide your pupils through all the things they will need to learn if they are to pass their tests. Not only will your pupils gain from this approach, but so will you when it comes to your Check Test which the D.S.A. asks you to attend every four years for monitoring purposes. If you have been effectively using properly structured lesson plans for all your lessons you should have no trouble passing your Check Test with a good grade thus ensuring you can continue in business. Also, an instructor with a good grade will find it easier to retain his pupils who will be impressed by his professionalism
