The rain
forests of the world have been depleted to the point of extinction by
the huge and never ending output of the written word. A large
percentage is in the form of books, many of which concern driving or
driving related matters.
With
21 million driving licence holders in the U.K. alone and the whole of
the rest of the 60 million or so population needing to use our roads at
sometime or other it is little wonder that the range of titles and
subject matter is so vast.
If
you search on AMAZON
for example you will find a book on almost any
driving related subject imaginable - and the choice can be bewildering, and not only books.
You'll be amazed at the selection of items you can find
there.
It
is not the intention here to write or re-write all the existing
material on the market concerning the various aspects of either
learning to drive or teaching the subject. There are limits as to how
many ways something can be explained and many authors have burned many
candles doing so already.
Instead
it was felt more appropriate to point you in the right direction to
help you find whatever it is you need to meet your own requirements.
Here
DRIVERS
WORLD has attempted to make your
search just a little easier and has divided what is available into
three main categories, identifying what is considered to be essential
reading in each.
There are several books
available, written mostly by the D.S.A. and a few by private authors,
which are considered to be essential reading for any learner driver.
They are detailed below with a very brief summary of their contents.
THE HIGHWAY CODE
by THE D.S.A ISBN CODE
0115519777
A must for all learner drivers, whether car or motorcycle. It includes
all the rules of the road and advises on the best driving practices.
The Theory Test is predominantly based upon this book.
KNOW YOUR TRAFFIC SIGNS
by THE D.O.T ISBN CODE 0115516123
Another must for all road users. It
explains the majority of traffic signs currently to be seen on U.K.
roads. You will see others which are not included, but which are
usually self explanatory - as all road signs are designed to be.
THE OFFICIAL D.S.A THEORY TESTFOR CAR DRIVERS by THE D.S.A
ISBN CODE 0115526609
Includes all the questions in the
D.S.A. question bank for the Theory Test and shows all the answers with
relevant explanations. This is a must if you want to pass your Theory
Test.
THE OFFICIAL D.S.A. THEORY TESTFOR MOTOR CYCLISTS by THE D.S.A

Theory Test book for car drivers, but with motorcyclists as the focus.

WHAT IF? (FOR MOTORCYCLES) - by THE D.S.A ISBN CODE 0115525408
Again, as for car
drivers, but written with the emphasis on motorcycle riders.
OFFICIAL D.S.A. PRACTICALTEST PACK by THE D.S.A
ISBN CODE 0115526102
This book is
combined with a DVD explaining what is needed to pass the Practical
Driving Test.
Many of these
books are available in CD-ROM or DVD formats.
There
are many other books available to help learners, written by both the
D.S.A. and private authors, which can supplement your driving skills
and help you to become a safe driver. These can be obtained on the
Internet via Amazon, W H Smith, Waterstones or Borders. There is also a
whole range of books dedicated to drivers of large vehicles such as
HGVs and PCVs which are available from the same source.
There
are several books which are thought to be essential reading for those
who are considering, or who are already training for, a career as a
Driving Instructor. Details of these are shown below.
THE DRIVING INSTRUCTORSHANDBOOK - by MILLER & STACEY
ISBN CODE 0749444983
This book, which is
recommended by The Department of Transport, is essential for both
trainee and qualified instructors alike. It covers in detail all
aspects of instructor training and procedures and gives comprehensive
guidance to qualified instructors who want to keep up-to-date.
THE OFFICIAL DRIVING MANUAL - by THE D.S.A SBN CODE - 0115521917
This is a book
which has long been recognised as essential reading for those
interested in safe driving. It is what its title suggests a manual
for all aspects of driving. It will be of great benefit to trainee
instructors preparing for their various tests, but will also benefit
any qualified drivers wishing to improve their driving skills.
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES & PRACTICEFOR DRIVING INSTRUCTORS by L
WALKLIN
ISBN CODE 0748716319
This book has been
approved by the D.S.A. and is recommended by them for those seeking
A.D.I. qualifications. It is essentially a book which teaches you to
TEACH - with its emphasis being on the driver training industry. If
you want to be a driving instructor you must also be able to teach.
This book will help you towards that goal.
Those books outlined
above are considered to be the minimum reading
requirements for those wishing to become driving instructors. There are
many other publications available, by both official and private
authors, which it would be wise to study if you want to be confident of
passing all three tests in the qualifying examinations. A browse
through Amazon, W H smith, Waterstones or Borders on the Internet will
show what is available.
The
availability of titles on the general subject of DRIVING
is colossal and what you prefer to read is very much a matter of
personal choice. Little of what is available can be considered as essential
reading, but there is a lot which could be classified as highly
recommended.
However, it would be
impossible here, and probably unfair, for DRIVERS
WORLD to recommend one book, or range
of books, in preference to another. Libraries are absolutely crammed
with publications and have indexes and catalogues detailing just about
every book written on the subject. Indeed Amazon
has built a highly successful business by making most of them available
to the Internet user at advantageous prices. Duplicating these
reference facilities is not what DRIVERS WORLD
is about.
There are many categories
of subject matter relating to all aspects of driving. Just a few
examples are listed below. It is suggested that if you have read a book
in one of these categories which you consider to be a good
read then let us know via either the Forum or Email and if
appropriate it will be listed for the benefit of others.
